Will I ever get better?

Category : Uncategorized

You might be asking yourself and your doctor this very question right now. No doubt that there has been some improvement from those early days right after the car crash but it is months later and you are still having the back and neck pain virtually on a daily basis.

If this is your situation, ask yourself first whether you have been following your therapy programme. The medical research says that the ideal plan combines the benefits of the various types of therapies available. In B.C., the four leading therapies for car accident injuries are chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage and kinesiology (active rehab / exercise therapy). If you have been following a programme that exposes you to all of these types of treatment, then you are on the right track. If not, then you need to do so.

There are some folks who complain about pain but who have every excuse in the book to avoid completing their entire rehabilitative therapy programme. They don’t have time or it’s too far away or it doesn’t seem to be helping, etc. Your doctor will have a hard time taking your complaints seriously if you don’t take your treatment programme seriously.

Secondly, look at your job. If you have a very physical job, and you finish the day riddled with pain, you may need to look at options such as lighter duties if they are available or part-time hours if you can manage it financially. These measures may be needed on a temporary basis to give your body a better chance to recover.

Look at your recreational pursuits. You may be addicted to golf, but if a morning round of golf means an afternoon wincing in pain, you may need to cut back for a while.

Try to get more sleep and eat as well as you can – less candy bars and more broccoli.

If you are doing everything right and you still have significant pain, talk to your doctor about referral to a medical specialist or pain clinic for further evaluation.

Why do I need to go to a conditioning program before I can go for physiotherapy? Can’t I just go straight to physiotherapy? My doctor didn’t say anything about a conditioning program.

Category : Uncategorized

1. Many, if most people, don’t exercise regularly because of time restraints. Work and family commitments get in the way. So the fact is that most people are “deconditioned”, in plain English, out of shape. Then, they are injured in a car crash where the muscles are overstretched and torn.

2. The medical research says that it is not a good idea for people who are even a bit deconditioned to step right into a physiotherapy program. They will not get maximum benefits and they may even hurt themselves.

3. It is for this reason that IRC’s medical advisors asked us to set up a conditioning program that you take in the week or two before your actual physiotherapy sessions start. We call our conditioning program our “Pre-Physio Prep Program” ( Triple P program).

4. The Triple P Program is:

( a ) absolutely free

( b ) unique in that no other rehabilitation clinic has such a program

5. In the Triple P Program, conducted by our kinesiologists, you will learn about your muscles and how they work and the way in which muscles heal. You will also begin the process of conditioning with the use of gentle cardiovascular and stretching routines to get the blood flowing to the injured muscles.

6. At IRC, we hope that you see the thought process that has gone into developing our one of a kind conditioning program that you will take before you begin physiotherapy.

Do I Have to Have Chiropractic Care as Part of my Program?

Category : Uncategorized

1. Of course not. Just like you do not have to do physiotherapy or massage or active rehabilitation.

2. But if you do have chiropractic care as part of your treatment program, it will :

(a) improve your chances of recovering, and

(b) Impress ICBC that you are serious in doing everything possible to get better

3.What if your medical doctor doesn’t prescribe chiropractic? It doesn’t matter. You do not need a medical doctor referral. Remember that chiropractors themselves are “doctors” under British Columbia law.

4. Remember too that chiropractors are the experts in treating problems in the spinal joints. Such problems are very common sources of neck and back pain in car crashes.

5. And the best part – for chiropractic care at IRC, there is no user fee at all. ICBC pays the full cost of the treatment up front for IRC clients.

How Can IRC Offer a “No Up-front Fee Policy” when other Clinics Cannot

Category : Uncategorized

1. To answer that question, we need to look first at how people usually pay for treatment after a car crash.

2. ICBC does not pay the full cost of treatment up front, even if the car crash was not your fault. ICBC pays a portion of the treatment cost. The balance (the difference between what ICBC pays and the full fee) is called the “user fee”. For example, if the full fee is $90 and ICBC pays $40, the user fee is $50.

3. People who have extended benefits through work will bill the user fees to their extended provider. When their benefits run out, they pay out of their pockets. Those folks not lucky enough to have extended benefits have to pay the user fees themselves.

4. The problem is that many people find themselves in a very bad financial situation following a car crash and they simply don’t have the money to pay the user fees. This usually means that they either have no treatment or much less treatment than they need to get better.

5. IRC has a unique policy whereby it waits until your ICBC files settles before it collects the user fees, even if it takes many years.

6. At the time that your file settles, ICBC must pay you the user fees as an additional part of your settlement. They are called “special damages”. You will collect these special damages at the time of your settlement yourself if you have no lawyer. If you have a lawyer, he or she will collect them on your behalf. It is only after these special damages/user fees are collected from ICBC that IRC will collect its fees in your case. And IRC charges no interest on the user fees, no matter how much time it takes for your ICBC case to settle.

7. Why is it that other clinics do not have this policy ? It is because these other clinics don’t have the financial resources that IRC has and therefore need to have you pay the user fees immediately. IRC, with its resources, can wait to be paid.

8. The no up front policy of IRC allows you to have your treatment now and have the cost paid by ICBC at the time of your settlement. With this unique policy, you have the opportunity to access the complete IRC program and therefore give yourself the best chance to fully recover from your injuries.
